My dad used to hang out at Studio 54 in the 70s and 80s after he got out of Vietnam (volunteered for the draft to help his family get green cards – WWII refugees).
He knew Steve Rubell very well. They happen to grow up together
I used to airbrush t-shirts in Panama City Beach, back when spring break was welcome and the girls really went wild. Club La Vela was the largest nightclub in north America. Come Party With Thousands was their slogan. Because I airbrushed La Vela would give me a VIP card which I almost never used. Lots of Russians around back then. One night, two Russian girls asked me to get them into La Vela with my VIP card. I strolled to the front of the line, with a beautiful Russian girl on either arm, Oksana and Inga, and we walked right in. As soon as we got inside they ditched me faster than you can say Dasvedanya, but it was still cool. I went home to my sleeping wife. Paka, tsuki.
RIP La Vela. The vast dance floors are empty, the sound systems are silent. The rivers of beer are dry. That place had an indoor waterfall. Their swimming pool had an island for chicks to dance on, no dudes allowed. End of an era.
