  1. No doubt diabetes is a chronic and escalating condition in the U.S. That said, his statistic of "one third of Americans having either diabetes or prediabetes" is a bit misleading. The guidelines for what defines "prediabetes" have changed all the way up to 2003. When our parents were young, a fasting glucose reading at 120 qualified. Some years later it was lowered to 110. And eventually they reduced it to 100. Stress and sleep deprivation can cause elevated numbers (anybody get stressed before a doctor's visit?) So obviously the numbers are going to skyrocket when you change the "pre" diagnosis to 20 measures lower. Anybody tracking a 101 two running days (perhaps during an anxious stretch) is going to be included in that "one third" number. These readings are a snapshot in time and can fluctuate significantly.
