Happiness is related to associating value to yourself. By helping other people you are reassuring yourself that you have value to other people and that your existance has a purpose. Doing something for yourself may give you instant gratification and reward which may give yourself the illusion of value but it isn't fullfilling in a long term manner. It's why the persute of materialism is always endless because the illusion of happiness it rewards us with, is more attached to status rather than actual real life value to other human beings, and in the persute of status over other people you always have to compare yourself with the guy bellow you and also the guy above you. This usually gives way to a constant feeling of unsatisfaction.
Social status lead to brain changes that can predispose one to certain mental health disorders.
A bizzare disconnect for Joe, as he talks about people striving for success, to earn more money, so that they do not have to worry about paying bills etc… but somehow he cannot equate that with striving for happiness? Really strange not to be able to put these two factors together as basically being the same thing.
I was a psychiatric RN for 12 years and there were people in continual therapy for 40 years and still retelling the same stories from 40 years ago.
At the end of the day fix you life up and see if your so called depressed !
