The mask discussion is insane and always was. All you gotta do is compare countries with, to those without mask mandates. And those with partial mandates. In Europe we had all of those. There was literally no difference in the spread at all.
Now to the science: It's simple physics. Surgery masks and cloth masks have pores that are above 80 microns, a virus particle is 1 micron, the aerosols that they use to move through the air are below 60 microns. So of course they don't stop you from breathing in the virus. FFP2 masks in theory do, but almost nobody wears them correctly, and in practice also places where they were mandated have seen no difference in spread. And since outdoors the aerosols diffuse too fast for anyone to breathe in a minimal infective dose, any mask is pointless outdoors.
Of course the biggest problem was that the WHO kept denying airborne spread… The WHO was the biggest spreader of misinformation during the pandemic.
