Joe is very ignorant of the fact that the people who would decide whether a person is mentally, physically, or rationally competent to "own or buy" a new firearm are capable of corruption and deceit.. it is a slippery slope to give an inch, and the overwhelming majority of gun crimes in America are not done at the hands of legal responsible gun owners. He speaks nothing of the illegal gun trade market or how illegal gun owners are able to procure weapons in so many ways. He's clearly ignorant to FACT, thats now proven that the CDC has been massively manipulating or even outright hiding stats around the number of crimes and / or shootings that are stopped, thanks to legally armed americans. As the owner and trained user of MANY firearms, im more than happy to discuss matters related to reducing the violence in America or anywhere in the world. Like many Americans, i train multiple days per week in the use of firearms and I'm constantly learning from a legal and political aspect and yet, some doctor or government appointed official is supposed to determine whether or not I'm qualified to own or purchase firearms? Why Joe do you act as if we want any random teacher to be armed in schools? Why do you discredit the process of being permitted and trained and released by licensed training centers for such permit.. why do you discredit the idea of arming certain qualified teachers, and yet you also stand against placing more law enforcement in and around schools? Why do you mock Americans who want to protect their 2nd amendment rights when we have the political left whos been attacking those rights for decades? Why do you discredit the facts around gun violence being far less common than knives or blunt objects? Why do you discredit the facts around crimes committed by permit holding armed Americans being extremely low? Why can't you admit that we have a political party that has polarized this issue so badly and who has stopped at nothing to fully eradicate the 2nd amendment no matter the cost.. why do you discredit the laws and rules that the left implements that only result in increased crime and violence? You are a fool and a hypocrite, Joe.. There are so many points that you just ignore completely because of pure emotional illogical concern for violence.. i dont know anyone who doesnt want violence of all kinds especially shootings to be stopped or prevented but you nor anyone else who argues for more gun control have ever proposed any meaningful methods for doing so that dont remove or infringe on our rights. The rights of good people who just might be the only hope for stopping crimes commited by violent monsters out in society who likely have their guns illegally anyways.. stop ignoring the facts and blabbing on about leftist talking points. It's ridiculous, and if you dont like it, move to another country that never made the promise of the 2nd amendment to its citizens..
Well, after a couple of mass shootings, we massively clamped down on gun ownership in the UK.
Murder rate spiked after for a while, and has since fallen back to the level it was at before the bans. The bans don't seem to have affected that either way. When you look at the murder rate per capita over the last century, it's been pretty consistent and far lower than the US. In fact, the murder rate per capita today is roughly about where it was in the early 1900's. It rests somewhere between 1.0 and 1.8.
The point to take from that is not a country vs country pissing contest, but the recognition that the UK's lower murder rate today is not due to gun control. It's been that way for a hundred years. We had few mass killings before the bans. We still have few after the bans. Turns out that if a bad person wants to kill someone, they aren't stopped by the law saying it's naughty, and if they can't get their hand on one tool to kill, they don't just give up.
Our cops carry more firearms now. Still not routine by any means, and still a very small percentage of overall police do so, but noticeably more nevertheless. Just image-googling "UK Police" will return many images of cops armed with sub-machine guns.
It's hard to make the argument that we're safer now, and harder still to make the argument that tighter gun control in the UK made any discernible difference. Until US politicians start looking at the cultural and even medical causes for all this, I fear there will be no progress.
