Walter Freeman did it without anaesthetic, just wacked that ice pick into the brain and waggled it around! My colleague had a lobotomy (leucotomy as itβs known in the UK) in 1986 !!! I kid you not, she has two holes you can feel in the top of her head under her skin. She was given it for OCD and in her words it did nothing at all to help in anyway. Luckily she did not experience the devastating side effects that many do but it took her about a year to recover things like memory loss and her balance. She says she was young and her psychiatrist talked her into it, even in the 80s it generally was not the done thing for your average patient to question a Dr. She now promotes OCD and psychological interventions- when she told me I thought she was joking until I felt the two holes in her head! It really is quite beyond belief – although we seem to have forgotten these lessons and are busy slicing up kids again for other reasons !
