In your hands, I entrust my spirit. After this, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, though secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate for permission to take Jesus’ body down. Pilate granted permission, so Joseph of Arimathea went and took Jesus’ body away. Nicodemus, the one who had previously come to Jesus at night, also came, bringing about 35 kilograms of a mixture of myrrh and aloes. They took Jesus’ body and wrapped it in linen cloths with aromatic spices, as was the Jewish burial custom. In the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden, a new tomb where no one had yet been laid. Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation and the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there. On the Sabbath day, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought aromatic spices to anoint Jesus’ body. Suddenly, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, approached the tomb, rolled away the stone, and sat on it. The angel’s appearance was like lightning, and his clothing was white as snow. The guards, in fear of the angel, trembled and became like dead men. Early on the first day of the week, as the sun rose, they went to the tomb. They were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone from the entrance of the tomb for us?” Looking up, they saw that the stone had already been rolled away, and it was very large. Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. She ran and found Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!” But when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men in dazzling clothes stood beside them. The women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, but the men said, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, be crucified, and rise on the third day.” Then they remembered his words. So they went back from the tomb and reported all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. Now it was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, along with the other women who told these things to the apostles. But these words seemed to them like nonsense, and they did not believe the women. Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. When he stooped to look in, he saw only the linen cloths. So he went away, wondering to himself what had happened. Now, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel. The women, being frightened, bowed their faces to the earth, but the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen! Remember how he spoke to you when he was still in Galilee, saying that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, be crucified, and on the third day rise again.” And they remembered his words. Returning from the tomb, they told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them who told these things to the apostles. But these words seemed to them like idle talk, and they did not believe them. Peter rose and ran to the tomb; and stooping down, he saw the linen cloths lying by themselves. And he departed, marveling within himself at what had happened. The two disciples returned home, but Mary stood outside the tomb weeping. And as she wept, she stooped down and looked into the tomb. She saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Aramaic, “Rabboni!”
