Barbie was actually based on a comic character named Bild Lilli. Bild Lilli was based on Betty Brosmer.

Supposedly, He-Man was originally gonna be a "Conan the Barbarian" toy, but they made the toys before seeing the movie, and when they saw it was an R-rated bloodbath movie (not made for kids), they changed the Conan toy's hair to blonde, created new characters last minute, and voila', Master of the Universe.
