To a car collector, "its only original once" and to get a car that has not been modified or the engine opened up makes it much rarer than one that hasn't. If you want to drive the car fast and safely then recommend getting a non numbers matching car and go for it!
God, I'm old. I remember looking at a '71 Cuda at the dealership and thinking my reenlistment bonus would cover that nicely. But, my wife had other ideas.

Agree. Had old cars my whole life. Making them go, stop, and handle better than original is the whole point.
