WHO WROTE THE BOOK OF MARK? #biblestories FYTube

Most likely, the person who wrote the book of Mark was the evangelist John Mark. Although the identity of the author of the second Gospel has been the subject of study and debate over the centuries, this is the most widely accepted position within the Christian tradition. The truth is that from very early on the Church recognized the authorship of John Mark.
Not only the Gospel according to Mark, but also the other three Gospels of the New Testament, do not identify the name of their author in their content. However, external historical evidence and even some internal details shed light on who wrote these works.
The person who wrote the book of Mark was Peter’s interpreter
John Mark was a first-century Christian associated with the apostles. In the early Christian Church, believers in Jerusalem met in the house of Mark’s mother (Acts 12:12). Therefore, he obviously had contact with the apostles and many eyewitnesses of the earthly ministry of the Lord Jesus. Furthermore, John Mark accompanied the apostle Paul and Barnabas on part of their first missionary journey (Acts 12:25; 13:5).
John Mark had a deep connection with the apostle Peter, who considered him like a son (1 Peter 3:13). Because of this, and other historical data, most Christian scholars understand that Mark must have served as a type of interpreter for Peter, recording his testimony.
In fact, there are references to Mark as the author of the second Gospel from the testimony of the apostle Peter, as early as the beginning of the second century with Papias, a bishop of Hierapolis. Eusebius of Caesarea, an important ecclesiastical historian of the 4th century AD, preserved Papias’s testimony, stating that although Mark was not a direct follower of Jesus, he acted as Peter’s interpreter or translator, recording carefully, although not necessarily in chronological order , the apostle’s teachings and memories about Jesus.
This tradition defended by Papias and preserved by Eusebius is also corroborated by other ancient sources such as Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, Clement of Alexandria, Tertullian, Origen and Jerome. Everyone agrees that the person who wrote the book of Mark was John Mark himself based on Peter’s testimony. Furthermore, canonical lists and ancient manuscripts bear Mark’s name in connection with the title of the second Gospel.
Arguments in favor of Mark’s authorship
Despite these historical records, more recently some critics have begun to question the tradition in favor of John Mark, proposing other theories about the authorship of the second Gospel. Some scholars, for example, suggest that the Gospel of Mark was written by an anonymous author, possibly a Hellenistic Christian with a good knowledge of Jewish tradition, but not necessarily directly linked to Jesus’ original apostles.
In fact, there was a time when writings falsely attributed to the apostles were common. Anonymous authors used well-known names within Christian circles in order to give authority to their writings. But this was certainly not the case in the book of Mark.
Despite the doubts raised by modern criticism, there are robust arguments in favor of Mark’s traditional authorship. First, the association of Mark with Peter finds support not only in the New Testament record but also in very reliable historical sources that go back to the time of the early Church Fathers in early Christianity.

Second, the style and structure of the Gospel according to Mark are compatible with the idea of an interpreter recording the preaching and teachings of an apostle. The gospel has an immediate and vivid character, characteristics that could reflect the influence of an eyewitness like Peter. Furthermore, the structure and simplified chronological order of incidents in the Gospel are remarkably similar to Peter’s enumerations in the book of Acts (Acts 3:13, 14; 10:36-43). This may be a further suggestion that Mark may have recorded Peter’s memories.
