  1. Cocaine isn't inherently negative. What's inherently negative is ignorance. Like those doctors in the 1800s- if you don't know what you're taking, you're gonna end up dependent. (Although apparently being dependent on coke won't stop you from being a great doctor.)
To the extent that cocaine is a social problem, the problem is not the fact that cocaine exists and you can get it. The problem is that people experiment with it opportunistically, not thoughtfully. One day when you're 19 and drunk, somebody offers you coke. At that moment, you're not going to research it from medical, financial, and emotional angles and make a decision you can live with when you wake up in the morning and discover withdrawal and how much cocaine costs. And then a couple weeks later, when you get your tolerance up, and you really discover withdrawal and how much cocaine costs.
I work in the Cannabis industry in Colorado. Our first-time customers are not walk-ins. They aren't drunk kids trying to prove their fearlessness to their dumbass friends. They're like… arthritis patients, retired cops, mormon tourists who planned for a year and a half to buy their first 10mg brownie… My 70-year old aunt took two Bill Clinton puffs off a joint last year just to taste it… People are fucking responsible when it's legal. The downward spiral doesn't come from a drug. It comes from making a decision to know as many gangsters and drug traffickers as you can manage to form relationships with. That decision cannot be criticized outside the context of the injustice of the war on drugs. People are making a moral choice when they decide to give money to a cartel, and one of the most fundamental factors in that moral judgment is the undeniable fact that the war on drugs is fucked up. If you challenge me on control over the inside of my own body and mind, then I have a moral obligation as a living animal to subvert you.

If there were a cocaine store, I would not go there and buy cocaine. But being secure in the freedom to do so at any time if I so chose would change the calculus in the event of some new friend at a bar pulling out a baggie and offering to share a little bit of access to the benefits of his or her lifestyle. The more ignorance, the more mysterious and alluring a glimpse of access to unknown things will be, to all the more people. THAT is the gateway drug. Good old fuckin' dopamine.
