During my early anesthesia training, we used a cocaine spray to anesthetize and dilate the nasal passage before passing a naso-tracheal tube. I also used ether and chloroform once or twice as a training exercise. This was in Ohio, a state with a long history in the early days of the development of anesthesia for surgery.
