  1. It's this way because it's cheaper to pay 4 people to work overtime instead of hiring 8.
What has happened to work in general is a tragedy.
You work 50+ hour and are prideful of that but you're too tired to spend time with your family.
Mental, I'd live on ramen if I had to in order to have time to rest, breath, think.

  2. I always mentioned this to my Army commanders, the response was always "I once went 30 hours without sleep." It was frustrating because THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH what I was saying and really just threw the conversation in another direction. I also went without sleep for 30 hours, probably far more times than the officers, but I also know that it was dangerous and downright stupid, especially when you're in the middle of learning new skills and training. It makes absolutely no sense. Even in combat you're more likely to get killed or worse accidentally make a mistake and kill someone on your side. Not to mention the suicidal issues and medical issues it causes. ABSOLUTELY STUPID.

  3. this is a story of what happened to my dad and this is fact (uk born an bred). i'm 40 now and this was 20 years ago.

my dad woke up ill one day and as anyone (or most at least) know we in the UK just plow through illness , just get on with it kind of thing ….he seemed to get worse and worse through the day sort of like on a high but with being ill , he couldn't settle down …wouldn't sit and relax , couldn't focus on any particular thing …didn't eat or drink anything at all….

he went to bed that night BUT was up all night (like he was still on a high) so now onto day two , any little noise would make him paranoid and whatever made a noise he seemed to have to go find it and was very ancy all day so later on that second day the hospital was called and we where told to bring him in so we did , got asked all the usual questions medical history , drink/drugs use (which he has never used either) …..he has never really had any emergency visits to hospital in his life nor has he used drugs or alcohol , he had his blood taken and he was clear of anything that would immediately say there was a problem so that day they insisted since he hadn't slept and was acting strange and paranoid they kept him in and under close observation……which they did.

day 3 we got a call and they said they would like to keep him in for further observation because they couldn't pinpoint what was actually wrong but he had still not slept …we where asked to come in and speak to his doctor and those monitoring him so we did , they asked us about nay odd behavior before and there wasn't any , they asked again if he'd consumed anything he shouldn't have but again not that any of us knew of and it would have shown on his blood test anyways which where clear , they explained that he was very aggravated and paranoid and still hadnt' slept so they tried to sedate him BUT it didn't take at all , they said he wouldn't sleep , he wouldn't relax and he was talking to himself.

day 4 came around and again we where called into the hospital under emergency conditions as in get here right now he's not doing well , when we go there we where taken into a private room with multiple doctors and 2 security staff (kind of worried he'd done something bad and by the way they where acting it seemed so) we where told this : in the early hours he'd completely flipped and started lashing out , doctors rushed in to restrain him but couldn't so they where joined by security members too , in the end it took 6 of them to secure him but sedatives still didn't work to calm him down , apparently 2 people where injured during this — apparently my dad grabbed hold of the security guys wrist so so tight and so hard he'd managed to fracture several bones in the guys wrist all the while breaking two of his own fingers , he was restrained soon after and placed in a secure room with 24 hour monitoring , soon after this happened my dad had passed out cold.

this is the weird thing now — after he'd passed out the next day he woke not know where he was or what was happening , he spoke normally …told them everything he did remember which was up to several days before and nothing after , he was tested and checked by multiple doctors AND they even sent for a shrink before even considering releasing him which in the end they did , the never found a cause for what happened and it never happened again.
