  1. Majority of the monuments were put up starting in 1880 by the daughter of Confederate soldiers. Hard to put up monuments when your just trying to feed yourself and family and rebuild your life after a war. So it took them awhile plus the remaining soldiers (parents who served) were dying off so the daughters wanted to recognize them for thier service. Also many of the mothers of the M.I.A soldiers help build monuments to thier lost sons to whom they never knew what happened to them. They wanted a place to morn sense they didn't have a grave site to go to. I believe 100% those should not be taken down….but the one built in the 1960's not so much.

  2. Just listened to a TED talk on npr featuring Titus kaphar. Part of me gets being against the glorification of these statues. But another part feels like defacing or altering statues like Teddy Roosevelt’s outside NYC museum is akin to burning books. Like you covered, it should be conserved and used for historical and educational purposes. I don’t like the idea of a China cultural revolution level erasure for the new narrative; but I feel like a lot of people project their own pain and struggles on these symbols, they want a cause, a fight; and that’s how we end up with the toxic offense culture of today rather than benefit from historical education, conversation, and creativity.
