My uncle has a place on lanai, I go there a couple times a year for a few weeks at a time. The deer population is crazy, im pretty sure there’s even more deer there than Joe thinks. If you drive or walk anywhere on that island after 5 pm you’ll see atleast 4-5 deer. A ton of does, that’s why they reproduce so fast, but some pretty good sized bucks too which was surprising. I hunted there once awhile back and we shot one buck. Joes right, those deer are switched on 24/7 they are jumpy and hard to hunt but that makes it worth it. No locals really hunt besides the few employed and paid by the local government to control the pop. Idk why more mainlanders don’t go hunt there it’s a great experience. You usually don’t think of good dear hunting when you think of Hawaii but it’s amazing. And the environment is the best, I had a partial view of the ocean from one of the locations I set up as a blind.
Joe you should talk to the island governing body about inviting all tthe famous hunters to come out. You, James Hetfield aand Sweaty Uncle Teddy Nugent do a video hunt there as well. If you advertise numbers of axis deer on the island on these popular hunting shows, hunters would want to go. So the governing body a plows do many hunters to go out as week and let them stay at a hunt camp no charge . They pay for a plane trip license meals etc. But keep the cost reasonable and hunters would go. Give them free for tags asnd 50% of the meat goes to Hawaiian food banks. For bucks they have to pay for a buck tag. If I could go hunt there for what I couuld go to a reserve on Arkansas and spend less money I'd choose Hawaii over Arkansas. I say Arkaansas only because my family deer ca mp is opposite side of I30 from a reserve that sells canned hunts for Axis deer. If the numbers are that bad they need help but it's gotta be something guys can afford. Another thing could be to hit the tourist areas with pamphlets about axis hunts. Wife goes takes "surf" lessons from somee hunny island guy. He gets to hunt a deer that isn't common on the mainland.
I agree, i prefer hunting in areas that are overgrown.
