Boxing deaths skyrocketed when they introduced gloves. The sport of bare-knuckle boxing in its history had 2 deaths, I believe
Gloves do protect opponent's face from cuts because it channels the impact from a small area of impact (a bare knuckle) to a more spread out one (the glove surface). Unfortunately it doesn't protect you from internal concussive damage at all just like John said. In fact it leads to more internal damage because they can punch you harder without hurting their hand.
