No we're not innately good. We're opportunitst. We're also very selfish.
We have to be taught about being moral, but more importantly, there has be consequences to enforce morality.
Even though we know what's moral, most won't do it. As a matter of fact people will do the opposite if there's no consequences. Many will even get satisfaction from it.
Humans are a very evil species. Anybody who's not conforming to that, will do worst societally, such as nice people, or moral.
This idea that people are inherently "good" has to be one of the most intellectually lazy ideas you could possibly posit.
If you've ever opened up a history book you know people aren't inherently good, and this "othering" of historical figures and actors (e.i. "Well that was them, but I'M GOOD/not that bad) is also about as flawed a view as you could possibly have.
Human History is YOUR autobiography.
It's an idea that is at the very foundation of multiple domains of academia, from philosophy to psychology, and backed by decades of psychosocial experimentation and study. You think you're pretty good, or at least not that bad? Wrong. You CANNOT possibly know yourself well enough to determine that, how could you? It's a Jungian concept that your life is too short, too fleeting to truly know yourself. 80 years, you don't experience a wide enough variety of situations , you don't meet enough people to even coherently understand your CONSCIOUS mind, never mind the subconscious which makes up at least 2/3 of your mind. That's why we need history, an aggrigation of (simplistically) all human experience, everywhere, across all recorded time. THAT is the only way to truly get an even remotely clear and accurate image of who YOU are. Society doesn't add or subtract to your human nature, it only activates what was already lying dormant.
So go read a history textbook and then come back here and tell me how inherently good you think humans are.
Nah I say humans evil as fuck. We do what we want when we want. “If I can find someone with mutual goals then that helps”. “If there’s a law with loophole you’re for damn sure I’m going to abuse it like so many others have” like child support. “If I’m rich af, then I can bribe, lie, corrupt laws to benefit me, or hire someone else to work for me and buy whatever I want and all of the quantity of it and someone wants what I have, I’ll sell it too then at a huge profit”. “If no one is going to stop me from rioting and looting and raping and murdering and stealing, then I’m gonna keep doing it till I get caught by someone who disagrees with me”. You see we all can do these things regardless if I feel all of this is bad for everyone. However, as a feminist would say “you’re a man so you’re double evil and you’re opinion doesn’t matter”.

humans are good because society tells them to be, and society tells them to be because we are all hypocrites liars and fakes. societal norms are made to cover up that we are evil inherently.
if you take away the societal pressure humans generally become aweful. thats honestly why now we are morally better than ever in alot of ways. we got the internet now and financially things arent perfect but that keeps us in check too.
take away peoples money and food and a large society to shame them 😂 then you watch as people become awful lol.
