Back when people just told verbal stories they probably still lied here and there. The same goes with books, telecommunications and our modern paradigm, including the Internet. I don't think it's anything new. Misinformation no doubt goes back to the dawn of information itself. That said, as the Internet appears to be providing the largest shear volume of information in our known history, it would follow that there is also a historically high volume of misinformation.
The right channel has the right information.
