  1. The Wage gap doesn’t exist for a few reasons
    1. Using the definition wage is wrong because a wage is a fixed amount you make per hour
    2. If they are talking salary gap, salary is negotiable and more often than not, women are less likely to ask for a raise
    3. Also, if an employer can get away with paying women less, then why not just hire all women and no men?

  2. The problem is you can’t just look at the overall average pay of a whole population and expect them to be bang on equal for men and women. If you had a population where 50% of men are CEOs (high paying jobs) and 50% of women are nurses (lower paying job), then of course the average pay for men is going to be higher! The fact that the overall average pay favours men means that men tend to hold the higher paying jobs, not because of discrimination, but because they just do. For there to be a pay gap, you have to statistically take into account all the discount factors such as age, experience, job role, productivity etc. THEN if it shows there’s still a wage gap, you can make an argument for discrimination

  3. I’d be super interested to hear everyones view on this because have been trying to educate myself on this pay gap recently after a spirited debate with my partner. I don’t know everything obviously but again would just be interested on the different views of this
The first thing I wanna point out and focus on is, we’re very much in the middle of of the journey to true equality. If you look back 50 years to when the real ‘Equal Pay Act’ was established, the pay gap was somethin just over 30c compared to it now being like 7c? It says that men averagely work more hours than women do but hypothetically, and not thinking about the potential bias against hiring women (whether conscious or unconcious) may still be around.. if you were to make it compulsory for men to take maternal leave just as a woman would, do you think the pay gap would finally equal? Completely understand that some companies might not be able to pay out for maternal leave full stop but for just the ones that can like in corporate office jobs. I know for sure the gap would lessen but do you think it’d close it?

Also just another thing I’ve been thinking about on this topic. I think companies look at men and think yes, you’re what we want, you’re logical, analytical and rational. But forget that a woman can bring a more intuitive, holistic, creative and integrative view in a working environment and I’d argue it’s just as important and useful.
If you’re thinking about arguing that extreme physical jobs demand more men, I get that! You may get faster work out of a 100% male workforce in that department which is what companies would prefer over my opinion but.. I’d argue its more important to have an easier and healthier working environment that can eventually lead to a smarter and somewhat more efficient work environment, which I believe is what women and men could create together. Also, If you think woman act out and are more emotionally driven, I mean we are (those darn hormones) but only because we show it!
I think men can think a lot of the same thoughts tho and it could just be because they’re being overworked and keep things bottled up, the s**cide rates are a good example of this as they’re extremely higher in men than women.
Taking these two small factors into consideration, it’s clear that again, we’re very much in the middle of moving to a hopeful true equality and I know I needa research more but it seems like there may be some easy steps that may take away from corporate companies in the present, but will eventually lead to decreased number in mental instability for men and less of a bias again women and the way they work, therefore maybe closing this gap?

Idk, I have ADHD and just struggled putting this together so plz don’t hate! 😂 These are very small branches and ideas sprouting from the huge argument that is ‘the pay gap’. I do get why it’s real stats that exist and understand it’s not relating to a woman and man having different pays for the same job but rather in the present day, men currently are working more hours than women and scientifically are just able too. I think good debate would be ‘if it’s better to have harder working environments or healthier working environments’ 🤷🏻‍♀️
Anyways hope you have a good day and am super curious on if anyone can share similar thought processes! 🫣😊
