The dude who found his girlfriend in Barcelona was very possibly from California or Texas, a lot of Mexican influence, he could speak Spanish so there is a fair chance she would feel more comfortable within a Spanish speaking environment. she probably liked beaches and there were probably more flights to that city. If he went to Slovakia and found her that would be way less likely. He knew the girl and had an idea where she might have gone. He would have been in the tourist area, the statistical probability narrows.
One mistake a lot of people make is that sometimes there is just no changing other people's beliefs and not everyone has the same moral compass as you. The West have this problem and it is to their detriment.
You see a lot of people say, just give MDMA to the jihadis and they will just love other people and humanity. That apparently has been tried already and what happened was they just associated that with loving their god more and their own people more and actually reinforced their beliefs further.
Sam Harris is brilliant on a number of topics, but the war in Afghanistan is not one of them. I think he naively assumes that the U.S. had good, humanitarian reasons to invade, while never justifying why the problems of theirs are for the U.S. to solve.
