  1. I can't deny that I discover and learn new bits & pieces by listening to people like Joe and Doug. By the same token, they're prone to blorting a good old splap of diarrhea as well. Mental illnesses aren't constantly being re-named. It's been 66 years since the first edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders was published. You know what number edition they're up to? Five. They're hardly what you'd call capricious or prolific.

As for Dissociative Identity Disorder, it is a far more appropriate name for the condition. When people think MPD or DID, they think Sybil, or The United States of Tara. If you really want to see a good, if heartbreaking example of the condition, I highly recommend 'Being Pamela'. It's on YouTube.

The ingredients for DID are almost exclusively around childhood trauma. The most life-affecting cases are as a result of constant physical, sexual and/or emotional abuse and neglect. That Roseanne suffers from the condition speaks to a couple of things, perhaps a case that is not as severe and/or excellent therapeutic treatment. Some people with DID need 24/7 care.
