  1. I wish mentalists were more actively, and SINCERELY involved in studying the paranormal. I've read all the classic mentalism books, made a living off of it for a few years, etc. I'd repeat the same BS from Banachek, Randi, etc. It's easy to go after certain people–mentalists themselves are MEGA-liars. Do you know how much of mentalism is just traditional magic? 85%. What remains is some subtleties borrowed from TV psychics, or some techniques that can be backtracked without too much thought. YET, they play on the cultural authority of science (and psychology) to prop up a self-aggrandizing BS narrative about how they are Sherlock Holmes. That's nearly as unethical. Actually look at the BEST cases in psychical research: Madam Piper or D.D. Hume. Good luck saying a two person telepathy routine, a swami gimmick, or any other trick can pull it off. Sure, even authentic folks get caught–as do mentalists and hypnotists. Sometimes you need people to buy into you for powers to manifest. I'm not even a proponent of the paranormal, but I'm modest enough to be agnostic–and not pretend mentalism and magic tricks can explain the best cases.

  2. Society has a general distaste and down opinion over magicians (and mentalists). Shame, because never forget Magicians are the ones that have protected society from and called out con artists, cheaters, fakers, religious leaders, psychics, and mediums. Folks like Houdini, James Randi, and Banachek are proof of that.

Our "art" may be about lying and illusion, but only for entertainment and never for real.
