  1. Not at all black and white. The U.S. largely supported not only non-intervention but a good chunk supported the Nazi's and their treatment of 'undesirables.' Charles Lindbergh held huge pro Nazi Rallies, and a right wing radio host who had 40 million listeners a week routinely spoke of his support for the Nazi's and how evil Britain was even stating that Britain and France provoked and deserved the attacks.

It wasn't until an independently wealthy Canadian, and a friend of Winston Churchill named Bill Stephensen; set up his 'British Passport Control' in Rockefeller centre, that propaganda and media manipulation slowly began to move public opinion.

America was just as divided about the Nazi's then as it is the war in Ukraine today.

  2. I worked in an assisted living facility when this happened. The nursing staff had the news coverage on the TV’s, but I can’t remember a single one of the residents acting at all surprised by it all.

  3. I’m from the UK, used to go to my grandparents after school because my Mum worked until 5pm. I got home and was like “Nan, Grandad what the hell is going on?! Is it gonna be the end of the world?”

My Grandad says “It’s a terrible thing, all those poor people, it’s a new type of war. But at least there were people there saving them.”

He survived the blitz in Liverpool, where when buildings were destroyed or were burning, they were left to decay. If you got out, you got out, if you survived you survived.
