  1. I love how americans romanticize biker gangs but can't understand the somewhat justifiable Yakuza. They protect the poor for a tax and they tax the rich for sustainability. Lot of asian countries have that presence and because those men are members of local community we know and respect them them more than our gov members.

  2. 4:29 while the yakuza influence most facets of everyday life in japan, they do have a vested interest in not allowing lawlessness or fear to permeate the psyche. a positive public image helps prevent public backlash, and encourages people they "do business" with to be straightforward, it's just easier that way. it also pays dividends as a recruiting tool. their branding effort often manifests itself in times of crisis. after the tsunami in 2011 and the hanshin earthquake in 1995 (two of many examples), the yakuza were quick to respond by funding and coordinating rescue efforts and airlifting supplies to effected areas. this obviously doesn't dismiss they're still a ruthless criminal organization, it's just they really would rather the everyday citizen trust their presence.
the only ones the yakuza want fearing them are their financial and territorial rivals.
