  1. Buddha called these "realms," loka (plural). There were three primary ones, i.e. Kama-loka, Rūpa-loka, and Arūpa-loka, which had nearly infinite sub-realms. In English, we would define them as Underworld, Middleworld (us),. and Otherworld or Upperworld ("heaven") mentioned in multiple traditions, religions, paganism, et al.

These are products of the brain, ONLY in the sense, that these realms/worlds are a product of Consciousness period. I don't mean "consciousness" as in the consciousness of some creator god – something Buddha outright rejected – but consciousness as data, as a scientific concept. The Buddha taught that there were three ways to visit/see/interact with them: psychedelics, ability at birth, or through meditation which would allow one to utilize the Manomaya kāya translated literally as "mind-made body," or what new-agers would call an astral body.

In other words, he was saying that they were actual places with actual beings, but their interaction with matter could only happen through humans in the Kama-loka i.e. tricking them, possessing them, making them followers, i.e. Christians, Muslims, etc. or through union (yoga) or merging with us, i.e. ancient Egypt's Horus/Osiris merging in the Am Duat.

The brain is a transducer, receiver, transmitter, etc. A person is born within a certain "channel" what we would call perception of the world or global paradigm. This reduction of information is necessary for survival in the realm of matter. Too much information and/or ability to move about all three realms would be too much for humanity to handle at this point in our evolution. Currently, the only way to alter this is through psychedelics or meditation. Buddha said you can create the right cocktail of hormones (serotonin, dopamine, melatonin, DMT, etc.) combined with the right frequencies (alpha, beta, gamma, etc.) and p[roper training and technique. No psychedelics are needed.

The problem is that this meditation's foundation is in ethics, morality, and behavior (Śilā). Those emotions, feelings, thoughts, beliefs, etc. help increase the aforementioned dopamine, serotonin, DMT, etc. So, if you are immoral or unethical you are not creating enough of these compounds. If you are angry, depressed, miserable, hateful, greedy, uncompassionate, etc. you are creating the opposite chemical compounds, adrenaline, CRH, cortisol, catecholamines and thyroid hormones thereby depleting the compounds needed to utilize the "mind-made body." This is the root of the celibate tradition among monks, as frequent ejaculation affects hormone levels, so it's a technical matter as much as it is about "purity."
