For those curious, a pidgin is not a specific language but rather a type of language that emerges when two different languages have to coexist in the same space. The effect of this is that you usually end up with a very simplified and variable grammar, a smaller vocabulary, and a fusion of the lexicons of two languages. Hawaiian pidgin is a great example of this as it's a fusion between English and native Hawaiian languages. Patois, as Kyle pointed out, is a similar story, though it's technically a creole, which is just what happens when a pidgin becomes a culture's first language. Another interesting example is the dialect of Greek used to write the New Testament: this was a fusion of different varieties of existing Greek dialects and various other Semitic languages (like Aramaic) into a new language that was easily learnable for people in the Greek empire.
