Putting a camera on cops makes them behave. This pretty much invalidates Joe's point about their misconduct being stress-related. It's ego related. I say this having known cops personally and actually kind of liking a couple of them.
I also know a couple of guys who have been working to become cops and quit because of the people they had to work with. One of them had a classmate shoot his girlfriend while showing her the disarming techniques they had learned in that day. If his girlfriend had been busy that night he'd likely be armed and patrolling the streets with absolute authority. Can anyone argue that would be a good thing?
It is a fact that many police departments specifically hire people they don't think are smart enough to advance in order to reduce turnover. Are those really the people who should have this kind of power? Shouldn't there be higher standards, accountability, something done about bad cops other than putting them on paid leave? There are serious issues with law enforcement in the USA, and they've only been gaining more power.
Obviously we need cops. We don't need cops with M32s and MRAPs who beat and murder civilians on a regular basis with almost no accountability.
