Regarding the rats that could remember: could it be that the later scientists gave the rats more difficult tests than the intial scientists did? And could it be that the initial scientists may have underestimated the initial rats by giving them less challenging (than we might think) tests?
But I think the theory holds, its probably one nof numerous senses that we do not nominally perceive.
