Mercy Brown and her family were afflicted with tuberculosis. During this time, doctors didn’t even know what tuberculosis was, or how to treat it. Instead, many superstitions were created to explain the disease – none the least was vampirism.

I'd like to say that people were so stupid and superstitious a few centuries ago, but then I remember we are in the 21st century and there are people who still believe the Earth is flat. So not much evolving has gone around.
Such a sad tragic story.
