What gets left out of these discussions is the hard evidence of the prominence of mushrooms in early societies and their role in the development of religion that lead Terrence to extrapolate their role in earlier developmental processes. It would be foolish to dismiss such speculation out of hand. They were obviously very important on the socio-cultural level; a corresponding quantum leap of biological evolution is not necessarily out of context.
