We evolved to exaggerate danger. Its a survival instinct. Being extra fearful or predatory animals was beneficial. And then when you go back to your tribe its important to exaggerate it to the rest of the group because they did not witness it.
Having watched a few of these clips with Von Hippel, one thing is clear…dude has led a sheltered, privileged life. Which wouldn't be so bad as Joe does have similar people on. Except in comparison, they're usually aware of their sheltered, privileged lives. I get no sense that Von Hippel is self-aware. How can a person with any intellectual integrity make such a broad generalized state about 'we'. This is such a white suburban male thing to say. Preaching about how people should feel rather than understanding why people feel the way they do.

This man is one of my favorite guests. Hes so good at explaining. Doesnt get flustered or defensive. Hes amazing at teaching.
