  1. A lot of false info here so I'll clear it up.

There is no evidence of females penetrating males with their psuedopenis, that was never even remotely valid.

Siblicide in spotted hyenas is quite uncommon. In 24 years of research, the Ngorongoro Hyena Project has never documented this behavior. Granted, it varies from region to region.

The death rate for FIRST TIME mothers during child birth is 10-15%, but after this they can give birth just fine as the psuedopenis can expand more easily.

Also, the females and males are the same height and length for the most part, but yes the mothers are more aggressive towards males at a kill so that their cub can eat. Hyenas hunt much more frequently than scavenge and mainly do so alone. Often times though, the other clan members will be attracted to the commotion and the high-ranking individuals will push the lower-ranked ones aside until they have had their fill.

As for how gender relates to social status, there is no direct correlation. Hyenas that stay with their birth clan rank just below their mother and above any hyena their mother is above. The reason you often see lower-ranked males is because those are immigrants that have chosen to leave their birth clan and join a new clan where they have no bonds or social ties to give them a high rank, so they are at the bottom. Males that choose to stay with their birth clans are above any female or male their mother is above.
