I'm sitting on this fence with both my on the side of free speech but, he really mudered that poor kid. I saw it all.

The joke isn't really even aimed at the kid. The joke points out that people generally have a limit on their sympathy, and although we may care and we may celebrate the strength of a disabled kid like that, we are also very quick to get bored of such a story and wish the stunning and brave kid would just go away. It's a comment on the transience of sympathy.
