  1. This is an interesting analysis, but it's the wrong analysis – "everyone would be silent thinking everything will be OK" is just as unrealistic as "I personally would do something." Most people would lay low, but in any group of 250-400 people on a plane there's going to be at least one person, and potentially several, who doesn't think like everybody else. Some people are actually trained for such situations, other people are crazy, and others overestimate their ability to respond. But those people are almost always in the mix, so it's a virtual certainty that someone out of the 250-400 people is going to try to respond, and by doing so blow the "lay low and survive" myth out of the water. The real question is whether that will succeed or fail – which comes down to coordination and participation (aka courage).
All of this has been studied extensively. Preparedness trainers for mass shootings in places like shopping malls teach students to swarm the attacker, because the attacker cannot possibly kills all of the people swarming; a few will very likely be killed, but most will not. The biggest challenge to that kind of response, is the fear that you will be one of the ones to die. Hijackers know that they are vulnerable to response, but also know that their own power over passengers increases as passengers' fear of death increases. If an attempted response fails, the hijackers get stronger. Meanwhile, the layout of the plane prevents the kind of swarming that is possible in, say, a shopping mall. The passengers closest to the hijackers know they will be the ones to die, and they are the least likely to respond. This creates a knock-on effect as you get further away in which passengers do nothing because the person in front of them is doing nothing.
Hijackers know all this. That's why hijackers usually kill someone right off the bat – to try to paralyze everyone else with fear. But with this, too, the idea that it's safer to do nothing is ludicrous – nothing but fear dressed up in a rationale.
TLDR: Somewhere in the plane there are a few people who are going to do something regardless.

  2. This is the difference between Mark Wahlberg and the tool bags in this room. If you knew anything about Wahlberg’s past, there is no doubt he would have done something. So I’ll informed… but this is what sheep do.
