Many Protestant denominations, the Southern Baptist Convention in particular, have similar rates of sexual abuse. All of these allow pastors to be married. Celibacy is not the issue
As a Catholic joe study more before talking
as as the priests and nuns not getting married many years ago a priest who was very cool and easy to talk to told me that the real reason is money- if they let the priests and nuns marry they now they would have to have individual housing for these married people and they would have to support all these of kids they would have, and remember no birth control, and this would have to include medical, dental and education costs, and then he added, watch when there is no one left to be priests and nuns they will let them be married. It was a shock to me at the time, I was waiting to some bible verses to explain it etc. but after he explained it it made perfect sense. He was actually a good guy and I respected his honesty.
Abuses are bad, but if a man doesn’t have the strength to control himself and sublimate his desires for a higher cause, he is not fit to live the lonely and often thankless life of a priest. Priests have to be real men. Celibacy is a litmus test. It keeps the bar high enough to cut out the ones who would not be able to hack it. God save us from lukewarm priests!
Two guys talking about catholic tradition and doctrine. Yet, have no idea of catholic doctrine or teology and of why the church holds a celibacy tradition when it comes to clergy people and religious people. IGNORANCE IS DARING. But hey this are the “great thinkers” of our generation.
