I remember that time well. As a Federal Employee since 1984, I got to experience the shutdowns under Newt the Gingrich, in his pissing contest with Slick Willy.
I just am a little peeved by his apparent refusal to acknowledge assymetrical polarization. The right are the ones that are affected by right wing extremists. It is NOT extreme to expect people to have jobs that pay enough to live on, to give healthcare to all Americans, etc. The democrats do not have extremists. Communism is the extreme left. There's not a single democrat that pushes communism. And that includes Ind. bernie sanders, who has made clear he does not believe in communism. That said, the ENTIRE republican party in 2020 are all far-right wing corporatists. They make a big deal about money and spending whenever it's for public programs but have no issues passing tax breaks for the wealthy that cost the American government a trillion dollars in 5-10 years. They are AWFUL. Corporatism is NOT conservatism the same way communism is NOT liberalism. While they have a lot of the same values because each pair are on the same side of the spectrum, corporatism and communism are the extreme right and left respectively. We need to do a better job of explaining that

Newt Gingrich ruined politics for sure, but in WAY MORE WAYS than what was mentioned in this video.
