Publicly funded elections is a disaster. It centralizes power even worse than we have now. Gov't gets to decide and regulate who gets funded, first of all. It's heavily biased toward extremely wealthy politicians since an average person can't be bankrolled.
Also, to pick just one of a thousand examples: imagine, say, you own a ridesharing app. Bernie Sanders doesn't like your business and promises if elected president he will try to force your company into bankruptcy (or we could use the example of Obama and coal). You mean to tell me in a free country you cannot use your resources to try to promote a candidate who won't try to regulate your company out of existence?
The fact is, politicians aren't as much a slave to corporate money as you think. Rather, the corporate interests donate to politicians that already hold views in favor of what they want, which isn't always a bad thing. It's not always a good thing either, but at least it's not coercive and a freer approach to elections.
What's ironic is, if elections were publicly funded, people like Bernie Sanders who promote this idea would never get their campaign off the ground. The only reason he managed to almost beat Hillary out is because he managed to promote his brand and get people to freely donate their money, as opposed to coercive funding from the public by means of publicly financed election laws.
How you get the value of lobbyist services to fall is to take power away from the federal gov't. The exact OPPOSITE to what people like Lessig want to do. They want a gov't bureaucracy for pretty everything you can think of.
I enjoy listening to people much smarter than me talking. Things I'm not really even interested in. The amount of time was sadly perfect for my circus brain to stick around

Why not just make a goddamn website where candidates can espouse their platform alongside each other instead of plastering lawns and TV ads everywhere? Fuck this voucher bullshit. I don't need another $50 added to my taxes.
And let people vote online already for fuck's sake. These elections are run by Luddites.
This is a great idea, but we are America so we probably will just keep doing the exact opposite. That's good.
