Southwestern Bell Telephone was considered a monopoly & broken up decades ago to give other companies a chance to grow and build. That's the only way so many telephone companies exist today. They couldn't compete w South Western Bell & couldn't exist. For years Govt forced SWBT to provide lines & power to other telephone companies to help them start up and grow. SWBT had owned all phone lines.
Now Google, FB, Twitter are the monopolies that Govt needs to break up & be ordered to give help to their very small competiters to start to build
Meh. There are different types of competition and contexts it genuinely benefits. It's not the answer to every situation such as with medicine. While it does push forward towards new treatments, the current drive for profitability steers development towards only those treatments that can turn profit with benefits to the public good being an after thought, if at all, expecially with what patent laws currently are. The days of people like Jonas Salk are largely behind us. At least in the US.
