Not on purpose, but I am literally eating peanuts right now.
I hope this is clear how nuanced my opinion is: I think Jonathan Haidt is a necessary perspective for individuals regardless of political leaning. He will go on record to say he does not speak for conservative values, he is merely arguing for how multiple cognitive distortions play a role in how ideas with good intentions lead to unintentionally bad outcomes. Haidt, like many human beings, has a decent amount of nuance. The book co-authored by Greg Lukianoff is a challenging read because the authors themselves have to be careful about their own cognitive distortions (it can be argued some of this comes through through their dedication of detail regarding certain stories over others). So ultimately, there is the ultimate challenge of this book: can you read this, pick out and understand the argument, but also allow yourself to utilize the tools here to create a counterargument to the book you just read, that just taught you this stuff? I respect what Haidt has given to the psychological discipline, but I also disagree with him too. I wish he talked more about the limitations of his research; some of this is glossed over momentarily when looking at specific surveys about "words as violence" (I will say I have not completely finished this book so there's my own limitation). Omitting some of this for the sake of talking about the overall findings to push support for a particular argument does not paint a complete picture. It's confirmation bias in which a psychological researcher pulls from the research the most important pieces to confirm their viewpoint, rather than utilizing a study with a similar validity to unearth a possible limitation.
