Music theory is actually incredibly valuable, even for alternative musicians. The idea that it inherently stifles creativity is horseshit. People just balk at the word "theory" because they assume they'll have to rigidly adhere to a bunch of musical "rules", but knowing what the "rules" even are in the first place is the most effective way to break them. It means you're actually thinking about what you're doing with your music, which in turn produces thoughtful music. The best kind of music, imo.
