Just fir clarification "men of renowned" meant remembering not heros of good. No where in the Bible does ut indicate Nephilam are good.
I always understood "heroes of old, men of renown" in such a way as that, they were renowned by humanity, not God. What we considered heroes, in the eyes of God, were violent, sinful brutes.
The Nephilim seems to be the people that are ruling the earth today.
Im reading In Numbers 13 verse 32 that states, that the men had made a "bad report" about the land to the people of Israel. Could it had been that they were lieing about what they saw because they were to scared to go in and take the land?
