  1. I think you can still keep pygocentrus nattereri in most states, there aren't laws against them, but some states do have laws against various piranhas as pets. They're best kept in groups because they're schooling fish, so probably 5+ would be ideal, and as long as they don't get stressed due to rapidly changing water parameters or temperature, they'd probably make cool little pets. They're not as smart as oscars or bettas, but they do enjoy being hand-fed.

    EDIT – before anyone asks I don't condone keeping piranhas in tanks less than 100 gallons in size, and you should probably have adequate heating and filtration before attempting it. 100 gallons would be good for a single piranha, who would get lonely. If you want a proper school you'll need an 800 gallon tank. These things can get almost a foot long.
