  1. I wasn’t diagnosed with adhd until I was 27yrs old. I wasn’t the typical pain in the butt bouncing around the classroom, I was lost in the world of fiction from the age of 5. 70% of my hyper activity was in my head. When I was eventually diagnosed I was devastated. I struggled SO HARD every single minute spent in the classroom. I felt cheated, I wanted to do it over again medicated. I compare it to a child with poor eyesight, that CAN read if they strain super hard, constantly move about the classroom, harass teachers & students, make educated guesses to fill the gaps in the words & sentences to then realise their work had been 70% off task, completely misunderstood & all their time & effort had been in vain… the medication for adhd is like glasses for poor eyesight. I have 5 kids all w adhd too & I always gave THEM the choice to medicate or not. 2/5 did really well at school without any drugs but the other 3 genuinely needed them. They didn’t take meds during holidays & I allowed them to begin each term unmedicated, It might have been days, weeks or even months until “mum, I really need my tablets”. Medication helped my kids academically, socially & most importantly psychologically too. It saved them from being drowned in the words of frustration, ridicule & anger from teachers, they got to spend their lunch & recess playing instead of in detention. The affect of constant negative feedback from family, peers & authority figures throughout ones childhood scars deeply. Many ADHD kids lose their enthusiasm for learning, for socialising & eventually for life. Many end up with clinical depression & self medicate with drugs &/or alcohol, they lose respect for authority figures & the written laws, they make stupid impulsive decisions & end up in prison or dead. Not ALL that have adhd, but a decent percentage & speaking from the adhd perspective I can see, I can understand HOW & WHY this is so. I’m not dissing your perspective of ‘naughty Johnny’ in the classroom & you’re correct in your observation that many kids are either misdiagnosed or over medicated. It’s unfortunate that there’s currently no blood test or physically observable abnormalities to aide diagnosis, but many mental health “disorders” are invisible, only observable through behaviour & that’s because we don’t understand enough of how the human brain works, not because these problems are bogus. It’s a tricky one for sure!! I share this with you Joe & anyone else who bothers to read this to help people understand ADHD a little better & hopefully improve the quality of life for some.
