I think Lightsabers aren't actually made of light, and rather plasma. I heard that somewhere reading about the Star Wars universe… the good thing about that is that Lightsabers in tha context are very possible, and are essentially just really big plasma torches. The density and velocity of the gas could lend some realism to the physicality the blades have too.
And this is why I love Brian Cox whilst Neil deGrasse Tyson pisses me off!
(I love Neil too but he's so quick to dismiss everything!)
A LIGHT Saber is NOT made of LIGHT. It's high density plasma powered by a Kyber Cystal, and kept it by a magnetic force. The power being generated makes it heavy.. and we can see layers because it's not fun when you don't see stuff. There is a point… we also don't see blood or viscera in StarWars.. because it's made for kids…. stop being ridiculous
