The lightsaber blade would have to be emitted as a hologram through a series of oscilloscopes like an old cathode ray TV. Of course the plasma energy would be immense, and it's likely no two lightsabers were running at the same frequency, so they repel each other. It's also possible a lightsaber doesn't use much operating energy until it actually touches something, but that's a theory for another time
It wouldn't be actual light, because it has mass based on the movements. So it would be some kind of heavy plasma that can be focused and contained
