The Texas Super Collider had 23.4 KM of tunnels already dug before the project was cancelled. The tunnels were filled with water, in order to preserve its shape. Wikipedia has a good entry about the Superconducting Super Collider in Texas. I find it very interesting all the justifications politicians and scientists made for cancelling this project. In hindsight they were mostly wrong. Funny thing about history is that it's always noted when a decision was correct but very seldom noted when the decision turned out to be wrong.
