  1. I disagree with joe on the opiates being a possible exception to the legalise everything argument (56:50). The reason why people are losing their lives from opiates is because of the unpredictable strengths and other issues associated with black market opiates. Sure, you will find people who have died taking prescription pills, but at least with those, you know exactly what you are taking. Putting an end to the black market heroin trade would result in far fewer deaths. But obviously there is no silver bullet solution here. But the damage will always be less severe with a regulated market over a black market. Harder drugs like heroin and meth would never just be available to buy like cigarettes. I dont think anyone would advocate that. One idea is that they are only accessible via some sort of prescription.

The other thing aswell is that opiates in and of themselves are not actually as bad as you might think. If you are not injecting rubbish into your body such as cutting agents and not filtering your drugs properly and exercising a solid harm reduction philosophy, then you can function as an opiate addict indefinitely. People live their entire adult lives taking suboxone and methadone which are nothing more than synthetic opiates and they can function perfectly fine and live normal lives. Opiates do not ravage your body like meth does. The damage done from most heroin users is not from the heroin itself, but from the cutting agents, the unhygienic practices, not using clean gear, and the fact that they dont take care of their bodies like a normal person does. They dont eat well, their personal hygiene is usually terrible. It's not the drug in and of itself is what im trying to say.
