  1. The natives call this new larger, more aggressive chimps "lion
killers" because they have witnessed them viciously killing and eating lions!
They animals are, as suspected, eastern chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) aka "Bili apes" aka "Bondo apes". Research has shown that the Bili population of chimps are very unusual. They do indeed have a ridge on their skull like a gorilla. Their skulls feature a prominent “mohawk” ridge down the center just like a gorilla and, as such, were initially mis-classified as gorillas. Their faces are flatter than "regular" chimps. The native hunters say they are immune to the poisonous darts they hunt with. Just to make them physically and behaviorally creepy, the natives say these strange chimps howl at the full moon.
They make nests on the floor like gorillas instead of up in trees because they aren't afraid of anything. They're much larger and heavier than "regular" chimps. They walk bipedally and are taller than the human males in the area.
