The fruit was likely Fig, fig leaves are very big and potentially could be used to form a covering, Apple tree is impractical.
The fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil is paper. When man was able to read and write on paper, he was able to write things like the Bible. Man developed a sense of good and evil that they built upon generation after generation, building upon the things that those before them wrote on paper.
The fig is the only fruit mentioned as being in the Garden
