  1. Joe, you're a good guy in all but you need a little dose of reality with "I could have shot JFK easily from 80 meters with my compound bow" position.

I was in the Marines for 4 years. My entire life starting at a very young age has been immersed in firearms. Qualified expert in the Corps, invited to the Camp Pendleton rifle team, instructed weapons and tactics for small arms and spent 2 decades participating in competitive bench rest. If I were to tell you how many hours on the range, tens of thousands of rounds fired and time in my reloading room I spent it would be unbelievable. I had a turn of interest at the end of my time with shooting that is vital in this conversation. I am OCD and was obsessed with accuracy but the last 5 years while I was still actively shooting I became fascinated with bullet performance. I recovered thousands of bullets trying to discover which makes were the most effective after they hit the target, you name the bullet maker I recovered bullets. I designed a recovery box for my research, frooze newspaper, purchased ballistic gel, made homemade gel, placed ply wood in the recovery box as well as animal bones, fortunately I lived in a rural area where cattle bones were abundant. You don’t recover a bullet in the condition of the “magic” bullet after its hit a target, I agree with you on that, no question.

So with that here is a point of view on Oswald.

Sharpshooter is not a very high accreditation of his ability with a rifle but it does signify he knew how to shoot.

The 6.5 caliber is an excellent projectile with an amazing ballistic co- efficiency rate. My favorite as well as among many marksmen.

The rifle Oswald was using was a Carcano, it is not thought to be one of the great battle rifles overall. It was chambered in the 6.5mm, being a very short run during 1940 in the carbine length configuration, called the 91/38. You don’t see a lot of sporterized Carcanos from the 1960s, when the US market was flooded with WWII surplus bolt guns. The rifle itself was not a good rifle but albeit capable.

Here is where things get sticky for me. The optics (scope) on the rifle are pure junk, most notable the mount. I have read everything I can find and so little is dedicated to this point. People that are not knowledgeable about shooting look this over all the time. I can’t stress how critical this is. You can have the finest rifle in the world not be accurate at all with cheap, poorly mounted optics. The mounts on Oswald's rifle were side mounts, meaning that you could use the iron sights as well as the scope depending on what you choose. There is no evidence to suggest that Oswald went to the range to sight in his rifle. The FBI attempted this by “bore” sighting as well as practical and found the rifle mounts and sights to be too far off to accomplish without the use of shims, not uncommon for the quality and style of mounts. It has been theorized that Oswald used the iron sights which I would think is very plausible but adds to the entire picture.

My challenge to you is this. Lets meet, we should be able to find a setting where we can duplicate the 18 degree angle at a distance of between 175 and 200 feet shot. Let's find a surplus rifle, a 96 Sweedish Mauser or Carcano, pretty much anything, use a cheap period mount and old Weaver scope. I’d say let's just bore sight it because we have zero evidence that Oswald was at any rifle range ever! He didn’t drive and didn’t have a car so if he did get to go shooting it’s the best kept secret in the history of mankind but moreover, even if he did a long period of time passed between when he did and that fateful day. If you want, let's sight it in, then let it sit for 6 months, move it around a bit then go to the range. Gun people that are reading this know what I am getting at, I can rifle sighted in under 1 inch MOA and let it sit for 3 months (especially wood stock) and be 3 inches off. Then let's try the scenario and see how easy it is! Can it be done? Yes but not likely with all the circumstances. You need to ease up on the bow statement, you are sounding like an idiot.
